Pirton Census Returns

The first census in England and Wales was conducted on 10th March 1801. Since then, a census has been conducted every ten years. Unfortunately the very early censuses taken before 1841 were destroyed so this information is no longer available. Census returns for Pirton are available for the following years 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901.

After censuses are conducted, they remain out of the public reach for 100 years. So information from the 1901 census was released to the public in 2001. This census was the first that the public can access via the Internet (http://www.census.pro.gov.uk).

Note that access to certain information is chargeable.

Access to earlier censuses requires a visit to the Family Records Centre. (http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk). More information on censuses, including information obtained from the 2001 census that has been made available to the public, can be found at http://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001
